Child Killed in NC Dog Attack

A North Carolina family is mourning the loss of their 7-year-old daughter following a vicious pit bull attack. The first-grader and her mom were in a neighbor’s backyard when the incident occurred, helping to take care of the dogs while their owners were out of town. Despite previous, positive interactions with the two pit bulls, the girl was fatally attacked. Her mother suffered multiple bites and severe hand injuries. She remains hospitalized for her injuries.

The Danger Next Door

Many people assume that dogs they know aren’t a threat. This couldn’t be further from the truth. It is estimated that 70 percent of dog attacks involve child victims who are known to the dog. Kids are at an increased risk of being attacked, as they’re smaller and less aware of red flags from angry or violent dogs. Their small stature often makes it hard for them to defend against attacks, leading to fatal injuries. While we don’t know all the details of this most recent case in North Carolina, it’s likely that the victim was caught off guard by the pit bulls she was helping care for.

Dog Bite Damages

Nothing can undo the damage caused by the dogs in this incident. While they remain in bite quarantine with local animal control officials, the grieving mother is still recovering in the hospital. Though it might not be possible to turn back time and stop this attack from ever occurring in the first place, a dog bite claim can help recoup costs sustained because of the incident. Funeral expenses, medical costs, and the pain and suffering endured by this woman and her daughter can all be factored into a settlement. This may be small comfort in the face of a loss so significant, but it can help ease the financial burden these kinds of attacks can place on surviving victims.
