A woman is recovering in the hospital today following a brutal attack at a Norfolk Costco. Early reports are scant on details, but they all seem to indicate that the incident involved at least two pit bulls.
Police say the woman and her leashed dog were attacked by a pit bull at a Costco in Norfolk. Conflicting reports make it difficult to tell whether the woman was bit by her own dog or an additional pit bull, but she was taken to the hospital for treatment. Officers found one pit bull running down the street and the other inside the store being restrained by a customer. The leashed dog was also injured in the incident.
The two pit bulls have been taken to the animal shelter for a 10 day quarantine.
When you take your dog into restaurants and stores, you run a real risk. Even the best behaved animal can become overwhelmed by unfamiliar sights, sounds and smells. Throw in unpredictable human behavior and the chance the dog will run into an aggressive dog, and you’ve got a potential disaster on your hands.
If you do decide to chance it, make sure you’ve got your pet on a strong leash. Keep them away from small children they’re not familiar with, and stay attuned to their mood. If a dog is nervous, he is much more likely to act out violently. Keeping tabs on how the dog is handling the changing environment around him will be the best indicator that something could go wrong.
