Virginia Toddler Killed in Pit Bull Attack

A 15-month-old had died following an attack by a vicious pit bull. The girl was left alone with the dog while in the care of her babysitters. When the babysitters overheard the attack going on in the other room, they attempted to rescue the girl. They had to pry the toddler’s head out of the pit bull’s mouth in order to stop the attack. The dog also attacked one of the people responsible for watching this young girl. She was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, but tragically succumbed to those injuries.

Now, babysitters and owners of the pit bull are facing charges of felony child neglect and possession of a vicious dog. Authorities also found illegal drugs on premises, and charged one person with possession of ammunition by a felon. They are awaiting trial in Independence, Virginia.

This tragedy could have been prevented so easily. Dogs, especially vicious ones, should never be left alone with children. Family pets may be beloved and trusted, but they are first and foremost animals. Animals can be incredibly unpredictable, especially around little ones. Dogs can mistake friendly actions of kids – like pets on the face – for threatening gestures. Their response can be violent and turn deadly in the blink of an eye. In fact, it is estimated that 4.5 million people a year are bitten by dogs in situations just like that.

We send our condolences to the family of the young victim. Nothing is more tragic than the senseless loss of a life so young.
