Virginia Beach Police Dog Attacks Child

We expect the police to protect us, but when things go wrong, innocent bystanders can often become victims. A bank robbery suspect recently led police to the America’s Best Value hotel on Northampton boulevard in Virginia Beach. When they moved into position to plan for the arrest of the suspect, an 11-year-old boy staying at the hotel rounded the corner. Police say the boy ran into the dog, who attacked him until officers could pull the dog off the child. The boy sustained multiple bite wounds. The bank robbery suspect was arrested in the hotel parking lot about ten minutes later.

Nobody in the hotel alerted guests that police were present or actively looking for a suspect. When the boy’s mother left to investigate the police presence, the child wandered after her and was attacked. The family of the child recent told reporters that while they have been in contact with the Virginia Beach Police Department since the attack, there has been no indication that police will pay for the boy’s medical bills.

Police have been quick to defend their practices, explaining that they did not alert hotel guests to their presence as they did not want to tip off the suspect of their arrival. Still, no one can deny that the police did not adequately prepare for potential bystanders getting involved in the hunt for the suspect. Hallways should have been cleared before dangerous police dogs got involved.

Thankfully, the boy’s injuries were not life-threatening. Still, he will likely need time to recover both physically and emotionally. In the meantime, the Virginia Beach Police Department needs to rethink their tactics and strategy when using dangerous canines in their hunt for suspects.
