Montreal’s ban on pit bulls has been criticized by some and celebrated by others. That’s not surprising, considering how polarizing the debate on pit bull safety tends to be. But the ban in Montreal came after a particularly shocking attack – one that shouldn’t be forgotten amidst the flurry of controversy.
In June of this year, a 55-year-old woman was brutally attacked in her own backyard by a neighbor’s pit bull. The dog, new to the neighborhood, has figured out how to burrow under the woman’s fence to get into her yard. A neighbor witnessed the pit bull attacking her even after she had gone unconscious. The neighbor called the police but it was too late – the woman was declared dead at the scene. The owner of the dog was not home at the time of the attack. Police shot the dog upon arrival – it was too aggressive to approach.
This attack came just weeks after a local newspaper released the results of their investigation into the behavior of pit bulls. Their findings? Pit bulls were the primary offenders in serious attacks. Of course, the investigation prompted a fiery debate between pit bull lovers and haters. But after the attack on the Montreal woman, much of the debate was silenced.
In the following weeks, Montreal officials sought a ban on the breed. In September, they introduced legislation to carry out the ban. Earlier this month, a judge temporarily halted the new ban following a request from the Montreal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
The war over pit bull violence wages on.
