Political Door Knockers at Risk of Dog Bites

american-flag-1629938-1919x978With just over a week to go before Election Day, volunteers for both major political parties have been going door to door in support of their favorite candidate. But these volunteers can run into more conflict than just someone of the opposing ideology: dogs who feel threatened by strangers can attack at any moment.

That’s right, man’s best friend can spell trouble for anyone canvassing a neighborhood. The Washington Post recently reported on two political candidates who were attacked by dogs while they were out knocking on doors. With no “beware of dog” sign in the yard, nor obvious indicators that a pooch might be off leash on the property, it’s no surprise that many political canvassers enter yards without fearing a dog bite.

But anything can lie behind a corner or a half-open doorway. Dogs are naturally territorial creatures, and many aren’t afraid to attack first and ask questions of strangers later. Postal workers know this all too well – they are among some of the most attacked people in the country.

If you’re helping campaign this year, be sure to look out for signs that a dog could be nearby. Pet toys in the yard, bowls of food and water near the door or scratch marks on a fence should be sure signs that a dog could be home. Pet owners should do their part by restraining their animals when they see strangers approaching. Even if you’re not looking for any political conversation, keeping your dog inside and away from strangers will keep everyone safer. After all, if your dog seriously injures someone, you could be footing the bill for their medical treatment.
