Animal lovers will go out of their way to help a furry friend, especially if they know the pet’s owners. That’s what happened in Danville this week, when a woman attempted to help return a neighbor’s dog to its yard. Unfortunately, no good deed goes unpunished: the woman was viciously attacked by the pitbull. An admitted animal lover, the woman recognized warning signs that the dog saw her as a threat. The pooch reportedly snarled and growled when she approached.
Even when she took measures to back off, however, the dog had already decided she was an enemy. The dog struck, biting her foot and pulling off her shoe. The attack went on for several minutes. Unbelievably, when a passerby attempted to help the woman, the dog turned on him, even biting the tires of the truck the man retreated into. The incident only ended when police arrived and captured the animal.
Sadly, this wasn’t the last of the woman’s troubles. After receiving treatment for her initial injuries – including broken toes – she developed an infection from the bites. The infection quickly spread to the bones, forcing the patient onto antibiotics. Now, she’s fighting kidney damage potentially caused by the antibiotics. Richmond.com reports that the woman will need at least a few more weeks of treatment in order to make a full recovery.
If there’s anything to be learned from this story, it’s that we shouldn’t risk interacting with strange dogs, even if we think it’s the right thing to do. Call animal control if you spot a neighbor’s dog on the loose. They can return the pup to its home with the proper safety gear and techniques to prevent dog bites.
