A grand jury will review a Onancock pit bull attack that sent two girls to the hospital in January. The victims, aged 11 and 17, were standing at a bus stop when the dogs attacked. The 11-year-old was bit first, while the older girl fended off the pit bulls using tree branches and her fist. The younger girl required surgery after her right calf was shredded and her left leg and buttock were damaged. Both victims needed rabies shots after the attack.
The owner of the dogs was arrested following the incident, but posted bail shortly afterward. She waived a preliminary hearing in Accomack County on Monday. Both of the dogs involved in the attack have been euthanized.
Neighbors of the owner say this incident wasn’t the first time the pit bulls showed violent tendencies. One reported that the dogs had killed her ducks, and that other local animals had gone missing since the owner and her pets moved to the neighborhood last year.
Irresponsible dog owners like this woman need to be held liable for their actions – or lack thereof. These two young girls will likely suffer emotionally far after their physical wounds have healed. Something as run of the mill as waiting for a bus became life-threatening.
