Four People Injured in Newport News Dog Attack

On Monday, September 1, 2025, around 3 p.m., Newport News police were called to Barbour Drive after reports of two vicious dogs attacking people. When officers arrived, they discovered four victims suffering from dog bites.

According to news reports, two of the victims were transported to a local hospital for treatment. The extent of their injuries has not yet been released.

Animal Control officers with Newport News Animal Welfare responded to the scene and took custody of the dogs. Officials confirmed that the animals will remain in custody while the investigation continues.

Dog attacks can leave victims with far more than just physical injuries. Beyond the immediate pain and trauma, victims often face infections, permanent scarring, plastic surgery, and in some cases, lasting disabilities.

In this Newport News case, the fact that four people were harmed in a single incident underscores just how dangerous and unpredictable these attacks can be. Neighbors described the chaos and fear that swept through the street, leaving many shaken by the violence of the encounter.

Legal Rights for Dog Bite Victims

Virginia law requires dog owners to prevent their animals from harming others. If negligence plays a role in an attack, such as failing to leash, restrain, or properly supervise a dog, the owner may be held liable for the injuries.

Compensation in dog bite cases may cover:

  • Medical bills and future medical care
  • Scarring, disfigurement, or permanent disability
  • Lost income
  • Pain and suffering
  • Wrongful death of a loved one
