Dog Bites Can Run Up Homeowner Liability Insurance
Dog bites run the risk of driving up or cancelling a homeowner’s liability insurance— here are some tips on how to avoid such a frustrating and costly situation.
An article in the Tidewater Traveler relays a story in which a postal worker was accidentally bitten by a family’s dog. The mail carrier was required to report the bite to the USPS, and the family later received a medical bill for the medical treatment the employee had undergone. The family’s homeowner insurance covered the costs, but the insurance company subsequently dropped the family from their plan, forcing them to find a newer, more expensive plan.
It’s hardly surprising that the insurance company reacted so negatively to the claim—most dog bite claims cost insurance companies or policy holders nearly $30,000. It is critically important to keep your dog contained, especially if it has a tendency to be aggressive or even overly playful.
The Traveler recommends that you take other steps, as well, such as making sure that your insurance policy covers dog bites. Learn the rules very well—some companies will have a “one-bite” rule in which they cover the first dog bite; after that, any future bites are yours to cover. As well, the magazine advises you to ensure that any dog bite is treated immediately with medical attention, and that you tell the victim to save all medical bills; you should also call your insurance company immediately to report the incident.
