Woman Loses Finger After Dog Attack

A woman from Sterling Heights has lost her finger and the tips of several others after she was attacked by a loose canine while protecting her dog on an evening walk. The 54-year-old victim was walking her Cairn terrier at approximately 8:40 p.m. when she and her dog passed by a house with Boxer-Labrador mix.

As someone opened the door to the house with the Boxer-mix, the 2-year-old dog ran out towards the victim and her pet. The Boxer-mix began attacking the Cairn terrier when the woman jumped in to help her dog. The Boxer-mix then turned on the woman and began biting her fingers.

The owner of the dog came out of the house and pulled the dog off the woman. The Boxer-mix was taken to a local animal shelter to be euthanized due to its not being up to date on its shots, including the rabies vaccine. The owner of the Boxer-mix was charged for harboring a dangerous animal, failure to restrain a dangerous animal, and having an unlicensed dog. The Cairn terrier suffered several lacerations but is expected to recover; the woman who was attacked sustained a badly lacerated finger and lost the tips on multiple other fingers.
