Arlington County Places Restrictions on Dog Tethering

Virginia Dog Bite LawyerClaiming the practice creates dangerous, aggressive habits in dogs, Arlington County, Virginia, has placed new restrictions on dog tethering, according to WAMU.

The new regulations claim that leaving one’s dog tied up for extended periods of time is not good for the pet’s well-being; furthermore, the practice allegedly creates aggressive tendencies in dogs. Arlington County now prohibits tethering dogs for longer than three hours at a time; additionally, the county mandates that dogs cannot be tied to “trolley” or running cable systems for more than twelve hours in a twenty-four-hour period. Failure to obey this new law will result in a misdemeanor and a $100 fine.

Dog bites can be incredibly injurious and sometimes even fatal—it depends on the aggressiveness and the breed of the dog. It remains to be seen whether or not Arlington County’s new regulations will lessen the amount of dog bites that take place there; in any event, it is a good sign that the county is taking steps to prevent animal attacks. We know that dogs who are chained or tied up too long can develop aggressive tendencies and are more likely to bite, so this could be an excellent solution.
