2024 Dog Bite Report: Top Virginia Cities for Mail Carrier Attacks

Virginia Dog Bite Lawyer

The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) released its annual Dog Bite National Rankings, revealing the Virginia cities where mail carriers most frequently encountered aggressive dogs in 2024.

As pet ownership rises across the country, so too does the number of dog-related injuries, especially among postal workers who are often the first to approach a home.

Based on the 2024 USPS data, Virginia reported a total of 150 dog attacks on mail carriers across the state. The following Virginia cities reported the highest number of dog attacks on mail carriers last year:

These numbers may seem small at first glance, but they represent serious risks to these communities not only to m ail carriers, but to everyone.

Dog bites can cause severe injuries, and in rare cases, death.

National Trends: Dog Bite Claims Soar Past $1.5 Billion

The Insurance Information Institute, in collaboration with State Farm, reported that dog-related injury claims across the U.S. reached $1.57 billion in 2024, a staggering increase from $1.12 billion in 2023. A total of 22,658 claims were filed nationally—an 18.9% rise from the previous year.

Even more notable, the average cost per claim climbed to $69,272, up more than 18% from 2023.

Over the past decade, the frequency and severity of these claims have steadily increased. Experts attribute the rise not just to medical costs, but also to higher legal settlements and growing awareness of victims’ rights.

What This Means for Virginia Dog Owners

With several Virginia cities ranking among the most dangerous for postal workers in 2024, the data sends a clear message: dog owners must take responsibility for controlling their pets, especially when mail or packages are being delivered.

Simple precautions, such as keeping dogs secured behind a door, in a fenced yard, or on a leash, can help prevent painful and costly incidents.

In Virginia, dog owners can be held financially liable for bite injuries, particularly if the attack occurs on their property or involves a service worker lawfully present.
