GA Toddler Killed by Pit Bulls; Grandmother Charged

A Georgia woman has been arrested on charges of second-degree cruelty to children and involuntary manslaughter following a fatal pit bull attack on her grandchild. The incident occurred in the woman’s home, where she was babysitting her 20-month-old grandson. She and the toddler were outside when the pet pit bulls came bounding out of the house, knocking her down before attacking the child.

The woman was able to get the dogs off of the child, put them inside and rush the boy to an urgent care facility. Tragically, it was too late: just 20 minutes after the attack, the child succumbed to his injuries.

Police have not yet confirmed that the pit bulls involved in the attack belonged to the woman, but revelations about the woman’s pet ownership history point to some scary facts. She has been charged with maintaining disorderly animals on multiple occasions. Incidents including the dogs running around the neighborhood untethered and being tangled in their leashes are said to have led to the charges.

The two pit bulls involved in the attack will be put down. The grandmother was recently released on a $50,000 bond.

We send our condolences to the parents of the toddler killed in this horrific attack.

No matter how you feel about the reputation of pit bulls, there’s no denying that large dogs can be incredibly dangerous towards young children. If you have both toddlers and dogs in your home, take extra precaution to restrain the animals when the baby is present.
