Newborn Mauled To Death By Family Dog

An 8-day-old baby girl has died after being mauled by the family dog. Police say the infant was lying in her bassinet when the family’s large “shepherd-like” dog came in and attacked the child. Police say the baby’s head and upper body were primarily hurt in the attack. She was rushed to the hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries that afternoon. No charges have been filed, but officials say they are checking on the well-being and safety of the two other children in the home. The dog has been euthanized.

Dogs and Babies

While the family dog might be a beloved member of the family, it’s important to remember that even the most well-behaved animal is still just that: an animal. Regardless of the amount of training a dog has, they can still act predictably, especially in situations where their usual environment has changed. The loud cries of an infant can unsettle a dog, causing it to act even more unpredictable than usual. This is possibly why the dog in this horrific case acted out, but we won’t know for sure until police finish their investigation.

Necessary Precautions

Families with small children should never leave dogs and kids alone, even if the parent is just stepping into the next room for a moment. It only takes mere seconds for a dog to snap and lash out violently. Parents should consider having large dogs go and stay with friends or family when an infant is first brought home from the hospital. Because of the unpredictable nature of both babies and dogs, you can’t be too careful when attempting to prevent a tragedy like this one.
