A North Carolina family is in mourning following the loss of their young son. The 7-year-old boy was killed when a pack of dogs chased him, his brother and two other children near their home in Lumberton, NC. The kids spotted three dogs running their way and attempted to flee, but the pit bulls were able to catch up and attack the children. One dog tackled the 7-year-old, biting at his face and breaking his neck. The boy was taken to the hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. His brother suffered injuries to his lower leg and required stitches. The dog owner has not been charged. The pit bull who killed the boy died in the excitement of the attack.

The loss of such a young life is tragic. Our thoughts are with the family at this surely difficult time. Accidents like this one are senseless. A peaceful Sunday morning turned deadly in the blink of an eye.

This is the fifth dog bite fatality in five years in Robeson County, NC.  Since 2005, dogs have killed nearly 400 Americans. 64 percent of the dogs responsible were pit bulls.

If an unfamiliar dog approaches you while off its leash, do your best to remain calm. Stand still, no matter how afraid you might be. When you begin running, the dog sees you as prey and goes into hunter mode. Experts say that staying upright is the key to fighting off a vicious dog. Once you’re down, it can be virtually impossible to fend off a large animal. Use your height advantage to ward off the dog. Calling for help as loudly as you can might indeed be the safest option.
