Labradors Revealed as Most Frequent Biters

A new study has revealed surprising results about the kinds of dogs who most frequently bite humans. The study, conducted by two Denver area news agencies, lists the top five breeds that most frequently bite. The top spot, surprisingly, did not go to pit bulls, a breed that has faced much scrutiny through the years. Instead, the typically well-repudiated Labrador has nabbed the top spot on the list.

Other breeds on the list include

  • bulldogs,
  • german shepherds,
  • chihuahuas
  • and yes, pit bulls.

The study included information about the severity of bites as well as where on the body dogs tend to bite. The information was gathered from news reports dating back to 1982.

The results of this study shows that though the public has perceptions about certain breeds of dogs, any animal with teeth can bite given the right circumstance. Even family friendly dogs like labs can be violent at times. Opposingviews.com points out that regardless of breed, the friendliest animals have been known to bite.

Keep this study in mind when approaching dogs you’re unfamiliar with. Children, especially, should always ask permission from dog owners before petting animals they don’t know. Many dogs aren’t comfortable with kids and can respond violently to them.

If you’re a dog owner, consider muzzling your dog in public. Even if they don’t have a violent history, you never know what they might be triggered by out on a walk. Of course, always leash your dog when you’re out on walks to protect not only other people and animals, but your own dog.
